We can check your child’s eyes at any age. If you suspect your child has a sight problem, book them in for a sight test. We recommend a sight test for all children before age 4.
Although most children have good eyesight in infancy, any defect, such as a squint, will cause problems later on unless treated at an early age. Vision screening checks are often carried out by doctors, health visitors and other medically trained personnel, but these are often not as comprehensive as a full eye examination by a qualified optometrist.
Left untreated for too long, some sight defects cannot be put right later.
NHS eye examinations are available free of charge for children under 16 years. There are extra charges for some services, for example colorimetry, coloured overlay evaluations and contact lens appointments.
